Britain’s left-wing Prime Minister Keir Starmer has resigned — pushed out by his own party just two years after winning one of Labour’s biggest election victories in history.
Story Snapshot
- Starmer announced his resignation on June 22, 2026, outside 10 Downing Street after his own Labour Party turned against him.
- He will stay on as a caretaker prime minister until Labour picks a new leader, with nominations opening July 9.
- Former Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham is the clear frontrunner to replace him and confirmed he is running.
- Labour lost 1,000 local council seats in May elections, and over 95 Labour members of parliament had called for Starmer to go.
Starmer’s Own Party Forced Him Out
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced Monday that he is resigning as leader of the Labour Party and will leave office within weeks. He made the announcement outside his official residence at 10 Downing Street — the same spot where he gave his first speech as prime minister two years ago. Starmer told the public he had “heard the answer” from his own members of parliament and accepted it “with good grace.”[6]
The final blow came when Andy Burnham, the former Mayor of Greater Manchester, won a parliamentary by-election in Makerfield on June 18 with 54.8% of the vote. That victory gave Burnham a seat in the House of Commons and a clear path to challenge Starmer directly. Many Labour members of parliament immediately pushed for a leadership change, and Starmer’s position became impossible to hold.[4]
A Collapse Months in the Making
The signs of trouble had been building for months. In May 2026, Labour suffered a crushing defeat in local elections — losing 1,000 council seats across England and getting pushed out of power in Wales after 27 years. The anti-immigration party Reform UK picked up nearly 1,300 seats in those same elections, showing just how far voters had moved away from Labour’s agenda.[21] By mid-May, over 95 Labour members of parliament had formally called on Starmer to resign or set a departure date.[4]
The pressure did not stop at backbenchers. Health Secretary Wes Streeting resigned from the cabinet in protest, along with four junior ministers and four ministerial aides. An Ipsos poll released just days before the resignation showed 52% of British voters believed Starmer should step down — up five points from the month before.[14] Even President Donald Trump weighed in, posting on Truth Social that Starmer “will resign” after failing “badly” on immigration and energy.
Burnham Steps Forward, Leadership Race Begins
Starmer said he asked Labour’s National Executive Committee to set a timetable for a leadership contest, with nominations opening July 9 and closing July 16. He pledged to stay in post as caretaker prime minister until the contest is complete, promising an orderly handover of power. A new Labour leader is expected to be in place before Parliament returns from its summer recess in September.[12]

Burnham wasted no time. He confirmed Monday that he would run for the Labour leadership, calling for the process to be handled in an “orderly and responsible manner.” Streeting, who had been seen as a potential rival, quickly announced his support for Burnham instead. If Labour rallies behind a single candidate and avoids a full contest, Starmer could be out of office as early as July.[10] Britain would then have its seventh prime minister in roughly a decade — a sign of just how unstable left-wing governance has become across the Atlantic.
