A Giant of American Music Is Gone

Clive Davis died Monday, June 22, 2026, at his home in Manhattan. He was 94. His family confirmed the news to The New York Times. No official cause of death was announced, though his spokesperson said he had been admitted to a local hospital on Friday after suffering from an upper respiratory infection. Davis was born on April 4, 1932, and spent more than six decades reshaping American music from the inside out.

Davis started his career as a lawyer. He had no music industry experience when he became president of Columbia Records in 1967 at just 35 years old. What he lacked in experience, he made up for in instinct. He quickly signed Janis Joplin, Santana, Aerosmith, Bruce Springsteen, and Billy Joel — turning Columbia into a rock powerhouse and proving that his ear for talent was sharper than anyone expected.

Fired, Then Came Back Stronger

Davis was pushed out of Columbia Records in 1973 amid a corporate dispute. Rather than walking away from the industry, he founded Arista Records in 1974. The comeback was remarkable. At Arista, he signed Barry Manilow, Patti Smith, and a teenage Whitney Houston — building her into one of the best-selling artists in history. He didn’t just sign her; he mentored her closely, helping shape her vocal style and career direction.

His bond with Houston remained one of the defining stories of his life. After Houston died in 2012, Davis spoke openly about how deeply her loss affected him. The two had even been working on new music together before her death. Davis later founded J Records in 2000 and served as Chief Creative Officer of Sony Music Entertainment, staying active in the industry well into his 90s.

A Career That Defined an Era

Few people in any industry can claim the kind of track record Davis built. He won five Grammy Awards and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2000 as a non-performer — a rare honor for an executive. His roster of signed artists reads like a history of American popular music: Pink Floyd, Neil Diamond, Barbra Streisand, Bob Dylan, Alicia Keys, Kelly Clarkson, and dozens more.

Davis also founded Arista Nashville in 1988, where he helped launch the careers of country stars Alan Jackson and Brooks & Dunn. His reach extended across rock, pop, R&B, jazz, and country — a breadth that no other executive of his era matched. Rolling Stone once called him the last of a dying breed: a music executive who still worked every single day and cared deeply about every note. He was 94 years old and still at it when he passed. America’s music scene will not see another like him.
