Mamdani’s Attempt To Install Socialist CRUSHED….

Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s attempt to install a Democratic Socialist ally on the New York City Council suffered a crushing defeat Tuesday, with his hand-picked candidate Lindsey Boylan capturing just 25% of the vote while establishment choice Carl Wilson secured 43% in the special election for Manhattan’s District 3 seat.

Socialist Mayor’s First Major Political Loss

The results deliver a significant blow to Mamdani’s political influence barely months into his term as mayor. Wilson, who served as chief of staff to the seat’s previous occupant Erik Bottcher, dominated the field despite Mamdani’s personal campaigning for Boylan on election day. The race required ranked-choice voting tabulation since no candidate topped 50%, but Wilson’s commanding lead signaled voters rejected the mayor’s socialist agenda. Layla Law-Gisiko finished third with approximately 20% of the vote.

Boylan, a former staffer to disgraced Governor Andrew Cuomo who became the first woman to accuse him of sexual harassment, only recently joined the Democratic Socialists of America. Critics accused her of opportunistically jumping on the socialist bandwagon following Mamdani’s mayoral victory. The Working Families Party endorsed her campaign alongside the DSA, but their combined support proved insufficient against Wilson’s establishment backing and district experience.

Council Speaker Menin Scores Major Victory

Council Speaker Julie Menin celebrated Wilson’s performance as a decisive win before ranked-choice rounds were even completed. The result strengthens Menin’s hand against Mamdani as she considers overriding his veto of legislation creating police-enforced protest-free zones around schools and universities. Menin needs only four votes to override the mayor’s rejection of the school buffer zone bill authored by Councilman Eric Dinowitz.

Wilson, the only openly gay candidate running for the district represented by LGBTQ council members since 1991, campaigned on housing access, public safety, and protections for LGBTQ and immigrant communities. His platform appealed to voters seeking practical governance over ideological battles. Mamdani had attempted to frame the race as progressive versus establishment, claiming Cuomo donors were funding Wilson’s campaign to stop Boylan’s momentum.

What This Means for NYC Politics

The election outcome suggests Mamdani’s personal popularity may not transfer to other Democratic Socialist candidates, potentially limiting his ability to expand DSA representation in city government. The mayor’s failure to deliver the seat for his chosen candidate raises questions about his political effectiveness and coalition-building capacity. Wilson will likely align with Menin on key votes, tilting the council’s balance away from Mamdani’s progressive agenda on issues including law enforcement and fiscal policy.

  1. Even during crisis, Americans can always resist attacks on what made us great. Basic cultural standards, small government, limited spending, freedom of speech and free markets. Lose any one of these will allow our enemies to defeat and control the rest.
