  • An ICE agent shot a man in the Bronx’s Marble Hill neighborhood Thursday afternoon while a 5-year-old child sat in the back seat.
  • Mayor Zohran Mamdani called the shooting “unconscionable” and demanded President Trump end all ICE operations in New York City.
  • Mamdani branded ICE “rotten to its core” during a late-night press conference and called for the agency to be abolished.
  • Federal officials pushed back, saying the man had an active warrant and a lengthy criminal record, and tried to ram agents with his vehicle.
  • NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch joined Mamdani for a public update as protests broke out near the scene.

ICE Agent Opens Fire During Bronx Enforcement Operation

The shooting happened just after 4 p.m. Thursday near Marble Hill Avenue and West 225th Street in the Bronx. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents, wearing construction vests and masks, were carrying out a targeted enforcement operation when an agent shot a man inside his vehicle. A 5-year-old child was in the back seat during the shooting. The man’s wounds were not considered life-threatening, and the child was not injured, officials said.

The New York Police Department confirmed the location of the shooting in a statement, and local outlets quickly picked up the story as details spread across the city. Within hours, the incident became a flashpoint between City Hall and the Trump administration over how federal immigration enforcement should operate inside America’s largest city.

Mamdani Demands Trump End All ICE Actions in NYC

Mamdani released a statement calling the shooting “unconscionable and incredibly serious,” saying early reports showed agents surrounded the man and the child before firing multiple rounds. He said he called President Trump directly and would “demand that he ends all ICE enforcement actions in our city”. By his own account, the mayor turned a single use-of-force incident into a citywide policy demand within hours of the shooting.

Despite the mayor’s outreach, no agreement followed the call. Mamdani said at a late Thursday press conference that he had also pushed for the man’s release from federal custody, and that “no headway had been made” on that request. The standoff left Mamdani publicly frustrated with an administration that controls federal immigration enforcement inside city limits, regardless of his personal objections.

Mamdani Calls for Abolishing ICE, Protests Erupt

During the same press conference, Mamdani went further than a single condemnation. He called ICE “rotten to its core” and said he was “outraged” by the agency’s conduct, repeating his call to end enforcement actions citywide. He also called for ICE to be abolished entirely, framing the shooting as proof the agency cannot be trusted to operate in New York neighborhoods.

NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch appeared alongside Mamdani for a public update on the incident, a joint appearance that signaled city leadership wanted a unified message to residents. Protests broke out near
