Trump Declares War on Classroom Gender Ideology

White House official Stephen Miller spelled out the enforcement plan in blunt terms this past May. He said transitioning a child without informing parents is child abuse, plain and simple, especially when it happens to kids as young as five or six years old. Miller’s comments confirm this isn’t limited to executive order language. The Justice Department is prepared to build cases against districts that hide gender transitions from families.

The policy shift already changed how schools handle Title IX. Reporting from January 2025 shows the administration ended Biden-era protections that let students access facilities and teams based on gender identity rather than biological sex. Older federal guidance from the Justice Department once told schools to treat students consistent with their gender identity without requiring medical proof or parental notification.

The American Psychological Association and groups like the National Education Association’s parent-teacher counterpart have pushed for school privacy policies shielding a student’s gender identity from disclosure, even to parents in some cases. That’s exactly the kind of concealment Trump and Miller say crosses into abuse. The two sides aren’t debating minor details. They’re arguing over whether parents have a right to know what’s happening to their own children at school.

Why This Fight Matters for Parents

Conservative parents have long argued that schools overstepped their role by treating gender identity as something to manage without family input.
