Twin Quakes DEVASTATE Venezuela

Two massive earthquakes struck Venezuela just 39 seconds apart, killing at least 164 people and leaving more than 14,000 missing — and scientists warn the death toll could climb to 100,000.

Story Highlights

  • A 7.2 and a 7.5 magnitude earthquake hit northern Venezuela within 39 seconds of each other on June 24, 2026.
  • At least 164 people are confirmed dead, over 1,000 injured, and more than 14,000 reported missing.
  • A 22-story building in Caracas collapsed completely, and Simón Bolívar International Airport was shut down after sustaining damage.
  • The U.S. Geological Survey warns the final death toll could reach as high as 100,000.

Twin Quakes Strike Venezuela Seconds Apart

Two powerful earthquakes rocked northern Venezuela on June 24, 2026, striking just 39 seconds apart. The first measured 7.2 in magnitude, followed by an even stronger 7.5 quake. The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) confirmed both events, with epicenters near San Felipe in the state of Yaracuy. Seismologists note that this type of “doublet” earthquake — two major quakes in rapid succession — occurs in only about 5% of major seismic events worldwide, making this a rare and devastating combination.[1]

The 7.5 magnitude quake is the largest earthquake to hit Venezuela since the 1900 San Narciso earthquake.[2] The shaking was felt far beyond Venezuela’s borders. Residents in neighboring Colombia reported feeling the tremors. A tsunami warning was briefly issued for Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and other Caribbean islands before being lifted. The scale of destruction unfolded quickly as videos flooded social media showing buildings crumbling and streets filling with terrified residents.

Caracas Left in Ruins — Airport Shut Down

The damage across Caracas was severe. Dozens of buildings collapsed throughout the capital. A 22-story residential building in the Altamira neighborhood fell completely, according to Interior Minister Diosdado Cabello.[2] Simón Bolívar International Airport, the country’s main gateway, was shut down after sustaining structural damage. Video captured the moment the quake hit the airport, showing the roof giving way as panicked travelers scrambled for safety.[4]

Cell phone service went out in many affected areas, cutting off emergency calls and making it harder for families to find each other. Communication blackouts like this are common after major quakes, but they slow rescue efforts and make it harder to get accurate casualty counts. Rescue crews worked through the night searching rubble for survivors trapped beneath collapsed structures.

Death Toll Confirmed at 164 — Could Rise Much Higher

Acting President Delcy Rodríguez confirmed at least 164 people killed, more than 1,000 injured, and over 14,000 reported missing.[9] Early media reports had cited as few as 37 deaths before the government released official numbers — a pattern common in major disasters, where initial figures are far lower than final counts. The 2010 Haiti earthquake and the 2023 Turkey-Syria earthquake both followed the same pattern, with early numbers far below the final toll.

The USGS’s automated casualty prediction system, known as the Probabilistic Assessment for Global Earthquakes Response (PAGER), estimates the death toll could rise as high as 100,000.[2] That figure is a probabilistic estimate based on population density and building vulnerability — not a confirmed number. Still, it signals that rescuers may be racing against time to reach thousands still buried under debris. President Donald Trump stated that the United States is willing to help Venezuela in the wake of the disaster, a sign that humanitarian aid may be on the way despite the strained relationship between the two countries.
